Passkeys are an alternative authentication method to passwords.
They make it easier and more secure to log in using your device.
Read this article to learn more about how to set a passkey.
Features
- Passkeys are created and saved for each device or cloud service, so there is no need to remember them like passwords. They are safe because third parties cannot guess them and cannot be reused on other sites.
- Using passkeys for authentication is easy because it uses the device's built-in authentication features such as face, fingerprint authentication, and PIN.
- Authentication information such as your face, fingerprint, PIN, etc. will not be shared with pixiv.
Syncing passkeys
You can check whether your passkey is synced from the passkey settings page.
If it says "Synced across devices", your passkey is stored on a cloud service. If it says "Only the device used to create the passkey", the passkey is saved on your device.
・If your passkey is stored on a cloud service
Passkeys are synced across devices, so you can use the same passkey on other devices using the same cloud service account.
For example, a passkey created on an iPhone can be used on other iOS/iPadOS/macOS devices, and a passkey created on an Android smartphone can be used on other Android devices.
Passkeys cannot be synced if the cloud services are different, such as iOS and Android. If you change your device, you will need to create a new passkey.
・If your passkey is saved on the device
You cannot use the same passkey on other devices. You must create a passkey for each device.
Impact on passwords and two-factor authentication
You can continue using passwords, log in using other service accounts, and two-factor authentication as usual even after setting a passkey.
However, two-factor authentication is bypassed when logging in using a passkey.
The passkey authentication checks for a passkey and confirms your device authentication. It performs the same authentication as a two-factor authentication, in a single step. Therefore, a two-factor authentication becomes redundant.
Please note that setting a passkey doesn't strengthen the security for other login methods, so we recommend that you also enable two-factor authentication.
